We believe writing is a fundamental skill that connects rural students to their voice which helps them to communicate on a personal level with friends and family while also positioning them for post-secondary success. Allowing my students to have high-quality supplies that writers take for granted is going to be one less obstacle they have to overcome to becoming proficient writers. In this very difficult time, I am teaching freshmen who have had the unusual circumstances of Covid and who have had their ELA classes disrupted for different reasons since fifth grade. Offering new supplies will send students the message they are valued.
