Being able to listen to literacy goes a long way as far as "modeling" how reading sounds! Not all students benefit from being read to in the womb. In Kindergarten, being able to listen to stories completes one of the five very basic components of a "balanced literacy " program. Some students are engaged by a teachers voice, but other students respond most to technology, especially if it's something they do not have the opportunity to use all the time. At this age we want to use all modalities to engage, excite, and expand our students interests in reading! The listening center will be used as a part of a balanced literacy program in my class. Students will move from one area to the next where they will engage in various areas: reading, writing, word work, time with the teacher, and "listening" to reading.
