My Project Research shows that providing students with alternatives to desks and allowing them choice in their seating, will increase their engagement in the classroom. These supplies will add to their options of a regular table, sit down desks, and stand up desks. Some students simply do not have the ability to sit in a desk for six or seven hours a day. With these options, they will feel empowered to make choices for themselves. These options will allow us to choose a better seating arrangement that meets ALL student needs throughout the day. All of these options provide students with opportunities for better collaboration, increased creativity, and effective problem solving. In the beginning of the school year, we will set up expectations for any work space they choose. And I will work with students to identify the places and seats in which they learn best. During independent, partner, and group work, students will be able to choose between traditional seating or the flexible seating options. They will be able to use the camp chairs, floor rockers, or bean bags to set up at any table or open space in the classroom. The wobble cushion can be used on a regular chair or the floor - one of my tables will even be set lower so students can sit on the floor with a wobble cushion and have work space. Lap tables will be available to give students a work surface, no matter what seating arrangement they choose.
