Fostering 21st century skills, technology must be integrated into the classroom. Laptops are going to be utilized to promote student-centered learning, collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking skills, and expansion beyond the classroom environment. With ten laptop stations in the classroom, the students are going to be actively engaged in authentic learning activities that are linked to real life situations.
Google offers an educational platform that allows for students to have access to many educational resources. Newton and Dell (2011) state that the Apps should be selected with the purpose of attaining the goals on students’ IEPs. Since the students with disabilities share the common deficit in literacy, students are going to be immersed in the world of digital literacy. Google has an App called C First which teaches students about computer science. Google also has Apps such as Fluency Tutor, Kids A-Z. and Common Core Quest that allows students to work on individualized levels to work on weaker skills. Students are going to use the devices to be creative in sharing information they have learned. For example, the students are going to use computers to share the information they learn through digital storytelling using Apps such as Prezi, Animoto, or Glogster. Furthermore, students are going to be able to access information by navigating the Cloud and maintaining an e-Portfolio.
Students are going to be able to travel virtually to museums, historical battle sites, to space, or to another country to gather information and to collaborate with peers. The laptops are also going to be a tool to have students engage in STEM activities that explore engineering, statistics, communication, and other real life situations. The overall goal of the devices is to improve student learning experiences and help close the achievement gap of students with disabilities
