Research has shown that students are more likely to connect and engage when they have choice over reading selections. This is anecdotally supported in my classroom, where I have students who are capable readers, but do not express an enjoyment for reading. This is primarily due to a lack of interest in titles chosen for them to read by the teacher. By providing my students more freedom of choice in their selections, I believe they will successfully engage with the stories. Using the novel sets my school already has, and supplementing with these selections, I plan to implement a system of book clubs coordinated to the writing units in my class. For example, our first book club featuring memoirs will correspond to our unit on narrative writing and telling their own stories. I believe the balance between choice and intention will help my students become more proficient and enthusiastic readers and will also help to improve their writing competency.
