I truly believe that if students have the opportunity to be comfortable and have flexible seating choices, their engagement level will soar. Young adolescence need to be moving. Research says that middle school children should move every 15 minutes. The seating that is being requested allows students to wiggle and move their body. My current seating does not allow for this. All seats in my room are stationary. Edutopia published an article about a teacher who was able to provide flexible seating in her class. After reading her experience, I realized I was struggling with the same things. Students have a hard time concentrating when sitting on a stationary seat for 60 minutes, whether they are working in collaborative groups, guided groups, or independently. Flexible seating proves to increase motivation, engagement, core strength, and overall posture. Physical acitivity has also been linked to creating higher academic performance. Students in middle school want to do well. They simply need the tools to do so. Students that struggle with attention problems will be given the opportunity to move and change seating, which can help to eliminate behavior issues that may arise. Providing flexible seating will only benefit students academically and emotionally.
