You may be wondering what is so essential about having a rug in a classroom. Is this really a tool that will be worth my resources and be a great benefit to these children's education? I hope I can convey an emphatic, yes! A rug in a classroom is not just for decoration, it is a tool used for instruction and creates a space where lessons can be received in a way that desks fall short. I can assure you that each and every day this donation will be used 3-5 times throughout the day, it will be impact the education of every child who I have the pleasure of teaching for years to come. Each day we will begin our day meeting on the rug. This will build a close community feeling among the students. It will let them know we are together as we move through our day and through life. They will practice effective communication because each day we will work out of differences in a healthy way so that when conflicts happen in their lives they have practiced skills to address these challenges. Additionally throughout the day, we will transition to the rug in order to focus on certain lessons; for example, Number Talks and Read-Alouds. It will also be used as a place to read independently and together with a partner during literacy stations The space on the rug will, as well, be used when we do various mindfulness and yoga exercises. Many of my students struggle with attention and anxiety issues. These exercises will allow their minds and bodies to possess the calm required to absorb instruction. Likewise, quieting some of the turmoil in their lives, thus reducing behavior and discipline problems for years to come. Your donation will be used gratefully.
