As a new English teacher, I have learned that it is necessary to provide books in the classroom, but do not have the resources to fund a classroom library. From day one, I want my students to explore books that interest them in order to sustain reading habits, however, students struggle to find books that they can connect with at ready availability. Often, my students come to me seeking suggestions or advice on what to read, but I have no books to offer them. With independent reading every day, a classroom library would allow students to experiment and explore multiple genres by simply walking to the classroom bookshelf. By offering a book collection in my classroom, I am able to personally assist my students in selecting a book they will enjoy. As of now, if the student is not enjoying a book, they must wait until they can find time to visit the library again, return the book, and pour over the overwhelming selection in search for a new one. A book collection is an excellent tool I can use to engage my students in reading and learning. Afterall, an English teacher without books is like an artist without a brush.
