My students will model the investigative procedures of real scientists as they put on lab aprons, gloves, and safety goggles, to carry out their discoveries. They will investigate the commonality of bacteria in their everyday lives. Students will experience hands on learning and grow bacteria in a laboratory setting. They will extend this investigation by preparing a microscope slide to view bacteria through a microscope. These activities will help them achieve an in depth understanding of many state TEKS. Bacteria serve essential roles in ecosystems and biological cycles, and make up two of the six kingdoms. For students, it is sometimes difficult to understand abstract topics one cannot see. However, these hands on experiences provide opportunities for them to develop greater understanding, by forming personal experiences they will remember. Students need these hands on experiences to mold their interests in the field of science. Some students know they want to become doctors, scientists, and engineers, but are rarely provided with opportunities to explore these fields. I am a strong advocate that the more exposure they receive, the more likely they are to pursue a career in the sciences. Your donation can help make these essential experiences possible for my students, and peak their interest in STEM careers and pathways.
