Book studies are a great way to engage students in a classroom. A lot of times, students will start to read a book and then abandon it before getting to the meaningful part of the book. I want to encourage my students to be more engaged in their reading by giving them the opportunity to collaborate with their peers. I will have small groups reading the same book on a schedule where they can meet after each chapter and discuss essential questions to help them dig into the deeper meaning of the book. These book studies will benefit my students in many ways: help with their reading skills, building critical thinking skills, form a deeper attachment to the book, expose them to books they may not usually pick and help them enjoy reading! Most importantly, it will help me establish a community of readers in my classroom early in the year.
