Having access to hands-on tools like a rolling easel will allow my bilingual students to work independently, in small groups, with or without the teacher. Magnetic letters and words will allow them to practice skills to increase their vocabulary, spelling and grammar in a fun and engaging way.
Being actively involved in their own learning process will help my bilingual students better internalize what they learn. Access to ELA and Math centers allows students to work independently or in small groups to practice necessary skills that help build their reading comprehension, increase their writing skills, and practice their math as well. The hands-on activities used in these centers are proven to help engage student interest. Dry erase materials allow students to practice without fear of making a mistake, thus increasing their willingness to try again.
Books in both English and Spanish are necessary to help bilingual students truly master a new language. Having access to books in their native language is essential for the development of their literacy skills. Leveled readers in English and Spanish will allow them to increase their vocabulary and understanding of both languages as well as maintain a sense of cultural identity that is crucial to a child's self esteem. By providing support of both English language acquisition while continuing to nourish the native language skills and culture, I hope to inspire my primarily Hispanic and bilingual students to achieve their academic goals.
