My students are all far behind grade level in reading, and we are working tirelessly to try and help them bridge the gap. Small-group instruction and vigorous lessons occur daily, but the short term memory for students with learning disabilities is often low, and often teacher-led repetition and the pressure of answering (and possibly getting things wrong) in class causes learning fatigue or a lack of motivation to engage meaningfully in the classroom. This is where the requested iPads, charging station, and Apple pencil can help fill the gap.
By using standards-based reading programs on the iPads that guide students by their individual reading level, my students can have an opportunity for their small-group lessons to be reinforced in an engaging way! As the whole class is taught in small groups, only a few iPads are needed to rotate students in so they may have meaningful time on the device, practicing phonetics and word reading at their own pace. Having a charging station will allow them to be ready to use each school day, and a stylus will be helpful in accommodating students who are still learning to write and use the programs to practice their letters.
