Significant research shows that most students, especially those with learning disabilities or special needs, learn best when given opportunities to engage in multi-sensory, hands-on activities. Providing students with a variety of ways to see and experience learning activities in all academic areas increases their engagement as well as their understanding and retention of the material. This project will provide students a variety of building materials they don't normally have access to, which they will use, both independently and in direct instruction, to learn English language arts, math, and science while building social skills. Both Legos and K'NEX can be used to support learning across subjects, from building words in language arts to manipulating patterns in math. Further enhancing this, the Lego Education Learn-to-Learn curriculum and set includes activities for every subject area that can be customized by student grade and ability. By incorporating these different building materials into learning activities, students will have the opportunity to learn new concepts in ways that work best for them. This will help them learn concepts they previously found challenging and will also empower them as learners.
