I believe that everything my students have to learn will go somewhere, from the next grade level to relevant real-world applications of math. My students learn from day one that they are not simply students in my classroom. Every student has to apply for a job in the classroom and maintain a budget. The students get paid weekly and must pay for rent each month, along with additional expenses. My classroom economy is almost 100% student-controlled and maintained. I train each student to record his or her income and expenses with a checkbook register (i.e., weekly paychecks, paying for pencils). My goal is for each student to walk out of my classroom at the end of the year being able to budget their money (and one day their income) and their expenses. Each student will be able to recognize priorities for monetary spending as well as how to save for college, a car, etc.
