As my students enter the third grade, they are beginning the transition to becoming independent learners. Success at this stage, as well as all future stages, will rely heavily on their ability to organize their work and retrieve it in a timely manner when they need to. Having a simple tool, one as simple as a 3-ringed binder, will afford my students great success in being able to organize their materials in one location that will be able to travel with them, no matter where they go in the classroom or in the school. However, coming from a low-income area, even a simple tool like a binder can be outside the reach of many students and their families. That is why I am asking, on behalf of my students and their families, for help in supplying my students with this simple but invaluable tool. The skills used to organize this binder will teach students responsibility, independence, and organization that will benefit them throughout their scholastic careers and, hopefully, translate into their everyday lives.
