Research has proven that having a student-centered classroom is the best option to improve student growth and learning. By providing students with many different learning environments, the children will be able to discover the way that they learn best and this will positively impact their learning. Students need to be given opportunities to be in control of their own learning. Taking ownership of their learning will help the students be more proactive in other aspects of education as well. The students will feel more excited about being in school when they discover that they can be in charge of what they learn and how they learn. I will be changing our classroom set up to table seating as opposed to traditional desk setting. This will help to create a stronger sense of community in our classroom. I will leave one group of traditional desks in case the students work better in that environment. When the students are sitting at a traditional desk there will be bands attached to the bottom of the desk that they can kick. This help the students focus better on their work. At one of the tables the students will have the option to sit in camping chairs. These tables have adjustable heights as well. One of the table groups will give the children an option to sit on the floor (on the bath mats) and use the table to write on. Another one of the tables will have yoga balls that the students can choose to sit on. The last table group will have stools as the sitting option. This new community that I am building in my classroom will give the students more ownership over their own learning and it will increase their willingness and excitement to learn.
