Flexible seating provides students with the opportunity to make the best choices for their learning. They choose a location in the classroom that works for them. A flexible seating classroom allows students to move and be more comfortable while working. Increased physical movement aids in brain activity and focus. The ability to move throughout the day will improve student attention and ultimately increase academic achievement. With a variety of seating options, our classroom can take many shapes and forms. Using these seating choices, students will be able to work individually, in pairs, or small groups. Students will also be able to have a seat that allows them to focus during whole group instruction. Sitting in one place or in a hard chair all day can become very uncomfortable. Flexible seating options such as wobble stools, balance balls, and fidget bands provide comfortable options and keep students moving throughout the school day. As students come in to the classroom each day, they will be able to choose a seat that is a "good fit" for them. Our classroom has large tables for students to work on. With flexible seating, the students sitting at these table could all be using a different seat option. Currently during whole group instruction there are many students who are using the standard chairs in ways that are unsafe for themselves and others. In our classroom numerous students struggle to sit still for even short periods of time. Wobble stools, balance balls, and fidget bands provide opportunities for these students to move in ways that are safe. The wobble stools allow students who often "tip" chairs to do this in a safer way. The balance balls and fidget bands also provide bouncing or rocking movement for students that have difficulty sitting still.
