"I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same." This quote by Rachel Scott is the foundation of Rachel's Challenge named after the first victim of Columbine. Students need to not only leave our classrooms with a stronger academic education, but also with a stronger character education. When students feel safe and loved, they are more apt to take risks in their education. Bullying and harassment decrease because students feel they are part of a greater whole. I have always believed that if I teach my students nothing more than to be kind to others, I have succeeded. Funding of this project would allow third grade students to create videos, tutorials and digital representations showcasing how to be a considerate and tolerant classmate utilizing iPads and the green screen. Students would be able to establish what makes a good friend and then produce demonstrations to show younger students. iPads would also give students an opportunity to interview students, faculty and staff about times when they felt connected to their school. These videos would be showcased on the school news daily. Through the promotion of friendship and tolerance building technology driven activities, students in grades kindergarten through fifth would help to cultivate an atmosphere of tolerance and kindness.
