Flexible seating options can not only improve the learning environment in a classroom, but it can improve motivation and engagement as well. Research shows that non-conventional seating options such as balance balls and wobble seats can help students use up excess energy, improve posture, and help to create a better oxygen flow to the brain. As adults, we would never choose to sit in an uncomfortable, plastic chair for 7+ hours. My 3rd graders certainly wouldn't either! I can't wait to implement these new seating options into my classroom. The new seating options will be used in many ways- during small group, as incentives, to help manage the effects of ADHD and other learning disabilities, and to reduce anxiety and stress.
