Part of a people having a voice is taking a stance for its beliefs. If a stance is not taken for something an individual or a group of people believe in, then the opportunity to see the world from a different viewpoint is lost. The more we learn about our own heritage and the heritage of others, the more understanding and respectful we become towards ourselves and other cultures, races, and ethnicities. As 4th grade students learn about the history of our nation, it is our goal as educators lead our students towards self awareness; and develop characteristics such as empathy, understanding, motivation for learning history, good listening skills, and much more. We want our students to understand that they have a voice, that there is power in their voice individually and collectively, and that they have the tools to apply that power readily available to them. A trip to the Equal Justice Initiative would help us to accomplish the aforementioned and more, but we need your support! Student engagement in real life learning events allow them to learn through seeing, hearing, touching, reading, actively exploring, etc. Bringing the real-life struggles of real people to life in this fashion will hopefully spark a flame of burning passion towards peace and justice for all.
