Each year, I expect my students to be flexible thinkers, to be willing to try new things, and to work hard to achieve goals. Think about that for a moment. I expect my students, who are from different families, cultures, and ethnicities and who all have very unique personalities, talents, and learning styles to come into one classroom and be flexible, hardworking learners... while sitting in traditional classroom desks. Flexible seating will allow my students to choose where they are comfortable as they collaborate, learn, and grow in our fifth grade math classroom. My students deserve a math classroom where they can participate in whole group lessons, collaborate with their classmates and teacher in small groups, and work independently in a comfortable place. My hope is that they will take on fifth grade math in a classroom they feel welcomed and at home- where they can truly do their best work.
