These resources will be used in a STEM/Coding rotation where students collaborate in small groups to learn through exploration at each station. An iPad (in a kid-proof case!) will give my students access to coding apps like Scratch Jr., Tynker, and Kodable. These programs teach flexible thinking, problem-solving, and perseverance. And they are fun! Coding is predicted to be one of the most in-demand skills of the future, spanning many industries and careers, and I want my students to be prepared for the world they will live in. My students need materials that will help them develop into creative problem-solvers who have the power to persevere and the wisdom to collaborate. Botley is a student-friendly robot system that operates with a programable remote and smart accessories. This is a screen-free way for my students to learn coding and collaborate with peers as they find ways for Botley to maneuver on paths and around obstacles. Speaking of screen-free... there's nothing like a tub of LEGOs or a box of K'NEX to get a young learner's imagination going! These are favorites amongst my students, and something that not all of them have to play with at home. They will have the freedom to invent, build, and explore during a Free Build rotation or they will be challenged to problem-solve in a Construct This rotation where they select a picture card (a bridge, a plane, a skyscraper..) and try to recreate the image. Students will also test their building and coding skills with the Code&Go Robot Mouse Set (and plenty of batteries of course!). This awesome maze kit and robotic mouse bring experimentation and exploration to the next level! I can't wait to see what incredible obstacles they will come up with to trap a robo-mouse!
