I am requesting this amount of books because not only does Black History need to be taught in the month of February, but it should be something that becomes a regular part of history and teaching. My aim is to use these books throughout the entire year, not just one designated month because Black History is American History. I also teach Virginia Studies and many of these titles would go great with some of the things the students learn about: slavery, the Civil War, the Civil Rights Era, etc. These books will teach students the positive impact people from different backgrounds have made in our country and our strength in diversity. They'll make connections to what they're learning in different content areas. The books will evoke good discussion and critical thinking. It will enhance their learning experience not only in the classroom but in their relationships with others and in the real world as well.
