I am fortunate to be part of a staff that engages in a variety of research based professional development opportunities throughout the year. It is due to these collaborative gatherings that I learned about DonorsChoose and give credit to the idea for a proposal to fund novels for my classroom library. It is my hope that by improving my classroom library with current, diverse (both in topic and culture) and engaging literature my students will be inspired to discover more about themselves, others and the world they live in. Donations to this project will be used to purchase novels for students to explore the possibilities of where books can lead them, to learn how books can teach them about themselves and others, to absorb the nuances of an author's craft, but most of all, to experience the joy of reading while discovering there is a larger connection to the world. This project proposal is my request to replenish and reinvigorate an outdated and depleted classroom library. The titles chosen will have multiple purposes throughout the year to support our realistic, fantasy and historical fiction units. I have also chosen many titles that are on the 2018 Mock Newbery list as well as titles to allow me to participate in the Global Read Aloud. These are two activities are avenues I wish to add to my toolbox to inspire and motivate my students. No two children are alike and their interpretations and experiences of the words on a page will be as unique as they are. My proposal is simple in request yet massive in potential. Simple because it will provide opportunities to students; massive because a spark of interest in reading will yield growth for a lifetime. Thank you for consideration of this project.
