Research shows that students are more engaged and show increased academic achievement when they are physically active. By bringing exercise into the classroom, students will have the opportunity to pedal on the bikes while still sitting at their desks. The bikes will especially help students who have trouble sitting still (which is most students at the elementary age!) However, all students will benefit from the added exercise during the day by increasing blood and oxygen flow to the brain and strengthening muscles...including their "thinking muscles"! Besides increasing engagement, productivity, and achievement, the bikes will also help promote fitness and wellness in all areas of life for the kids. This will show them that physical fitness is not just limited to gym class or recess. In our era of high childhood obesity rates, this is important now more than ever if we want to start kids on a path to healthy lifestyles in the long run.
