Students in my classroom come from all walks of life. Before the bell rings, the room bustles. Conversations reverberate in English, Spanish, and several African dialects. A few students swap stories with buddies, their faces animated. A couple quickly finish last night's homework. Some spend those precious few minutes zoning out to the music exploding from their ear buds. Bouncy beeps can be heard from a few boys playing a video game displayed on someone's cellphone. Click! Click! Click! The sounds of last minute text messages being sent off. WHOOSH! Two students dart through the door just as the bell rings and we begin another day in language arts. What you don't see is that many of my students qualify for free/reduced lunch. Many participate in at-risk programs. Several come as refugees. Some struggle with learning disabilities. Many lack a connection to school in general. But, they're all MY kids.
