I teach at a public middle school in Southeast Washington, DC. My school is a Title I school where 100% of my students qualify for free-and-reduced lunch and 100% are students of color. I've been with my school for three years, teaching reading intervention programs. In a school where 25% of our students require special education services, and the vast majority perform below grade level, the reading intervention classes I've led taught me invaluable lessons on the importance of literacy and the right ways to engage students in learning. Beginning next year, Fall 2017, I will be transitioning to the position of 7th Grade Social Studies, teaching Ancient World History. I am thrilled to share my lifelong passion for history, and I am excited to have engaging activities that also build students' literacy. Incorporating student choice and text variety, my classroom will provide multiple pathways to loving history.
