These books will enhance student writing development, fluent reading skills, and allow for student choice. Students will get to choose a historical figure from the "Who Was/Is?" book series to learn about and conduct research on whom they selected. They will write a multi-paragraph essay about their historical figure, and create a puppet or presentation art piece. Students will use public speaking skills to present their project to their peers and parent in the spring at open house. If they chose to make a puppet they will pretend to be that historical figure and present themselves to the class as well as answer questions from the audience! This will help engage students in writing and history, and it will inspire them to read and learn more about historical figures who have made and/or continue to have an impact in our society. When students have a choice in their subject matter, they exceed expectations in retaining information specially when art is incorporated!
