One thing that can really impact a school year is the classroom community. I want my classroom to be a place where my students WANT to be every day. Many of my students have a home life that is often chaotic, and school is their safe, supportive place. Unfortunately, many students come to school missing out on some important social skills. Using board games and puzzles to teach social skills such as taking turns, sharing, perseverance, and manners will help my students build better relationships within our classroom. Helping improve these basic skills will have an impact not only on student behavior, but also on their confidence with reading, writing, and math. They will learn that they can do hard things and support one another in a positive way. And the best part is, they can do all this while having fun! I would like a combination of both cooperative games and competitive games so that my students can learn to work together toward a common goal and also learn appropriate reactions when winning AND losing. Many of my students have either never completed a puzzle, or have very limited exposure to them. These will help them work on not giving up when things are tough and help promote thinking that is helpful in math. Many of the games I chose include a reading, writing, or math component, or could easily be adapted to do so. All the games and puzzles will help students work on their communication skills as well.
