The social unrest happening in our country is not lost on our children. Literature provides a way for kids to grapple with issues that are oftentimes difficult to discuss and understand even for adults. This year my school chose "Courageous Discussions about Race and Equity" for our Professional Development focus. Following discussions with fellow educators, I realize that my students need more diverse choices in our classroom library. They need, and want, books that reflect their lives. A classroom library filled with books that reflect the diversity of the students who will read them is a gift of empowerment. All of the books that we add to the classroom library are showcased and "book talked" before being made available for check-out. Sometimes, from those introductions alone, discussions evolve that lead students to know that ours is a class where everyone is important, everyone has a voice, and everyone deserves the opportunity to reach their highest potential. Please help me make more of these discussions possible!
