My students will have the opportunity to use these breakout supplies and work together to solve clues around the room to open each of the locks within a time limit. The curiosity that this generates gives them the drive to overcome the challenges and get the final lock box open. This activity provides the students the ability to practice their critical thinking, collaboration, creativity and communication skills. Learning should not be a spectator sport. True grit comes through challenging experiences that give students an opportunity to fail safely and succeed with perseverance. I believe that this creates a fun and interactive way to learn. It will help my students continue to develop a growth mindset as well as problem solving skills for overcoming obstacles in and out of the classroom. This concept can be used with both my science and social studies curriculum, either to introduce, develop or review content. I want to use these supplies to create the opportunity for five different groups of students to compete against each other and the clock to solve a task. There would be clues and locked boxes placed around the classroom. Once they decipher the clues, they discover hidden keys and combination passwords. Inside the locked boxes and/or bank bag could be a puzzle to solve, a black-light flashlight that reveals hidden messages, or a USB flash drive that directs them to a video containing a four-digit code. The Jefferson Cipher Wheel and the clear acrylic cube lock box would be a fun twist to change up the challenge.
