I am moving from teaching in a 3rd grade classroom to teaching kindergarten students next year. With this change, I understand that the students will be learning not only basic academic skills, but community responsibilities and behaviors as well.
Many of the materials I added to my project are hands on learning tools for students to manipulate while they learn such as magnetic letters, a calendar chart, and a class easel where they can showcase their learning. I also added organizing tools such as portable caddies where students can store pencils, crayons, etc in a community location to share with their peers.
It is my goal to implement life skills in the classroom starting in the kindergarten classroom community by teaching responsibility and ownership of basic skills they can use in and outside of the classroom.
I hope that throughout the year, students will come to the realization that they are capable of completing rigorous independent and group tasks by using skills they have learned through helping one another and realizing how their individual ideas help to create an effective learning environment.
