The supplies are for a 3rd Grade Integrated Co-Teaching class, which consists of 60% general education students and 40% special education students. They live in an inner-city low-income area. These students are creative and imaginative. They would love to be able to demonstrate their understanding of content through art. Some students with special needs particularly thrive in this area because it is the best way for them to demonstrate their knowledge being they struggle with reading and writing. As their teacher I am always looking for performance tasks that can help facilitate and enhance their understanding of other cultures in social studies. Asking them to answer questions on a test is not always the best way for students to demonstrate their understanding. Art can be integrated with Social Studies through the creation of projects. My students will be creating masks and presenting them to their classmates with information related to what they have learned in the unit of study.
