My students are in need of engaging learning centers that will enhance various learning styles, engage students in the learning process and help develop critical thinking skills. Research has demonstrated that engaging students in the learning process increases their attention and focus, motivates them to practice critical thinking skills and promotes meaningful learning experiences.
Do you know what your learning style is? If you are an auditory learner, you learn by hearing and listening. If you are a visual learner, you learn by reading or seeing pictures. If you are a tactile learner, you learn by touching and doing. You are a "hands-on" learner who prefers to touch, move, and build.
As a Special Education teacher it is important for me to understand the differences in my students learning styles in order to maximize their learning potential while addressing their IEP goals. The math and literacy learning centers that I have included in my project are dedicated to learning a specific topic or developing a specific skill. The learning centers will provide my students with the opportunity to not only develop a skill or idea, but also will allow students the movement and sensory input that many need in order to successfully stay on task.
