Not only are the messages and themes in the book Out of My Mind fabulous for children today, but it literally allows a teacher to teach all the Common Core Literature Standards with a single book. This is a great book for really digging in deep to a character’s feelings, thoughts, and motivations. The best part about this book is that the life lessons truly resonate with the students. They don’t have to think about the future or situations not typical to their lives. They are able to connect with the themes in this book which makes it that much more powerful.
The book contains all of these themes: 1. Believe in yourself. 2. You are stronger than you think. 3. Family is important. 4. Don’t judge a book by its cover.
As teachers, we should help our kids prepare to live, learn, and work in communities that will become even more diverse. Teaching tolerance is important not just because it is part of our American heritage but because the person who learns to be open to differences will have more opportunities in education, business, and many other aspects of life. I plan to do this with this book as a resource.
