My goal is for the students to gain a better grasp on cultural diversity. By putting themselves in the characters' shoes, they will learn about the struggles of cultures different than ours. Books like, "Turtles, All the Way Down", "Love, Hate and Other Filters", "The 57 Bus", and "How It Went Down" will provide us with perfect examples of people living with struggles in our country. Gaining the skill of empathy will teach the students how to treat one another better, regardless of culture, class or conflict. For future leaders in our world, compassion and empathy are imperative. They will gain insight into the struggle of others as well as improve their literacy skills. How is our understanding of culture and society constructed through and by language? Students will focus on this essential question as we read, analyze and discuss the books we read and report on. The books for the class all focus on the conflict of being different in some way.
