Flexible seating has many research based benefits in the classroom. It is very difficult and uncomfortable to sit at a desk all day and yet we consistently ask our students to do just this. Being uncomfortable is unhealthy in many ways and it certainly does not improve attention and work ethic. I want my students to be able to choose a place to work where they know they can focus and do their very best. If funded their seating choices would expand to include being able to sit at a low table in stadium seats, on the floor in stadium seats while reading or using a clipboard, using an active learning stool or wobble cushion to sit at a table or a desk and still feel movement, or they would be able to simply use a bouncy band on their desk to allow for quiet movement while working. Flexible seating supports collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, engagement and the list goes on. Flexible seating is the right choice for my students!
