As kindergarteners in an online setting, the balance between online learning and physical/material learning is a necessity. Students are still grappling with fine motor skills, counting, forming lettings and numbers, building words, and more! In order to improve their online learning experience, I’ve asked for a few educational materials. The Microsoft tablet will provide a way to reach students effectively at our exclusively virtual school. Specifically, with the touch screen, I will be able to model more effectively, how to form letters and numbers, which is extremely difficult to do with a mouse and a computer. Students having math manipulatives in their hands will lead to more interactive learning. Manipulatives can provide a bridge between the concrete and abstract levels of many mathematical topics. Manipulatives can also serve as models that support students as they think, remember, and communicate about mathematics. Manipulatives also increase student engagement and differentiation. Every manipulative requested supports multiple Nevada Academic Standards including all of the Counting and Cardinality standards in kindergarten. Students will learn one-to-one correspondence and composing and decomposing numbers in a more interactive way. The primary composition books will be used to ensure effective writing practices during reading and math lessons throughout the day, every day. Each student will have a place to store their writing as well as practice their writing skills using the primary lines on the page. Students will be able to begin mastering the Nevada Academic Standards for writing, including writing narrative, opinion, and informational pieces.
