My students face a vast set of obstacles to success: 97% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch, and for many of them academic success is often not a priority as they are facing very real survival issues outside of school. Another problem my students face is organization, so we are switching from desks to tables where groups can work. To help them take ownership of their learning, I am working to develop a classroom where students work in small groups, choose projects they are interested in, and are responsible for meeting deadlines for the completion of their own work. They can even choose what grade they want to "aim" for. Students will change groups throughout the year, and they will be required to take on different roles within those groups, helping them to develop the skills that are necessary to be successful in the workplace, as well as the classroom.
