PreK math is the foundation for so many skills to come in later educational years and life. PreK students are eager to learn and always ready to dive into an activity. I strive to tap into this eagerness to maximize their love of learning. Being able to work hands-on with manipulatives helps young minds internalize learning. Younger learners thrive when having trial and error experiences such as with the balancing monkeys and see-saw sorter in which students will see direct results from their trials. Using counters gives my young learners a concrete basis to understand number sense concepts. Having hands-on shape manipulatves gives my students the ability to have a 3-D representation of shapes and a deeper understanding of shape attributes. Rich and meaningful experiences are the beginning of falling in love with learning. I strive to achieve this with lessons adapted to fit the needs of my students with the help of invaluable student manipulatives.
