We all know the power of a good book. It keeps us engaged and at the edge of our seat. One of my favorite things is hearing students giggle as they read or gasp at a surprising plot twist. As a literacy coach, it is my goal this year to create a positive culture of reading at our school. I want to have a collection of texts available for students to borrow and bring home, and my hope will be that they will keep coming back for more! I also want to have a collection of great read alouds and mentor texts that classroom teachers can use in their instruction. Together, we will inspire students to become lifelong readers by providing them texts that they can not only can relate to, but texts that also inspire and leave students asking for more! As Rudine Sims Bishop said, children need books that are mirrors that allow them to see themselves and their own experiences; windows that they can look through to see other words that they can compare to their own, and sliding glass doors that allow them to enter other words.
