As an educator, I found out that one of the most effective way to help students learn, grow, and mature is creating a classroom community of learners. My 1st grade students need a rug so that can happen in our classroom. We will have morning meeting on the carpet, where we will sit and share our weekend experiences or topics or ideas that pique our curious minds. Allowing students the opportunity to share about themselves, things that sparkle their curiosity, or interest is an very effective way of engaging students. The most important reason we really, really need this rug is to assist my first grade scholars in building an intense foundation in shared reading and writing knowledge. In addition, the rug will be used everyday, all day for math, social studies and science lessons. In the primary classroom we teach calendar math; students sit together and review important aspect of the school calendar, mathematical concepts that reinforces what we have taught or a new concept that we will learn. Students will also use the rug to complete daily center activities in reading, science and math. Lastly, we will gather to the rug to just have a lot of fun learning and sharing ideas.
