Oregon Trail Academy is a small International Baccalaureate charter school in Boring, OR. OTA serves kids in the Oregon Trail School District to the east of the Portland metro area. As a charter school with only half of school funding provided by the school district, teachers often creatively work to provide classroom supplies and materials. Being a musically inclined person myself, it saddens me that our students don't have an opportunity to learn to play an instrument. I did some research into how I could provide students that opportunity and I settled on the ukulele for four reasons: 1. Simple to learn (especially compared to the guitar), 2. Relatively inexpensive. 3. Portability. 4. I know how to play the ukulele already. I have two main goals for this class: 1. Teach the kids to appreciate and enjoy various styles of music. 2. Teach the kids the basics of ukulele that they can continue to build on.
