Flexible seating in my classroom will enable students to make their own choices in where they sit and how they work best. With all of the advancements in the fields of education and technology, classrooms around the United States still look very similar to those from the early 1900s. In my classroom, the rows and rows of desks just aren't cutting it anymore! Throughout the school year, we complete a variety of collaborative projects, whether it is mummifying an apple to learn about ancient Egyptian burial practices, building a paper temple with classmates in a Greek Weeks simulation, critically thinking about how to create a bill in our Senate Simulation, or even discussing current events each Friday together in class. My students are constantly moving desks together, into small groups, or sometimes even out of the room entirely. Sitting in a desk for seven straight hours can also be extremely difficult and uncomfortable for my middle and high school students. Think about it, where do we do our best work as adults? I know I wouldn't choose a small, hard, uncomfortable desk! Providing students with flexible seating options will allow for collaboration, problem solving, and a more positive classroom environment. I've already personally acquired two couches, a love seat, and a comfortable chair... now I'm looking to add a few bean bags, stools, and exercise balls to allow students to work and learn from anywhere in my room. My goal is to create a safe, comfortable space for students to discuss, problem solve, and share ideas while learning about world history, American history, and government. Please help me in my quest to ditch the desks to better meet the needs of my students!
