Students from grades Kindergarten through 8th grade come to my room to acquire Spanish. Elementary students have Spanish twice a week for one semester per year and middle school students choose a language and take it full time for 3 years. Students acquire language in my class through comprehensible input based activities such as reading short stories, books and magazine articles, watching Spanish language shows, as well as listening to and co-creating compelling stories. Students are actively engaged each day in various input related activities and have so much fun they don't even realize they are acquiring language. Students can communicate in the language and write entire stories in Spanish. Students also enjoy hands on cultural projects such as the Day of the Dead 6th grade class alter featured in the photo. Last year we were risk takers and changed our classroom environment - we went deskless!
