Prekindergarten students learn best through playing and exploring their environments through hands-on experiences. The materials I am requesting stimulate learning in math but also across many other developmental domains including literacy, science, physical, social-emotional, and language. All the items on my list are hands-on materials for students to learn about number sense, concepts of shape, size, color, space, measurement, seriation and more. The number locks and number sequencing puzzles give students practice in number recognition, counting, and matching numerals to their quantities. Using items such as the Magna-Tiles®, Design Builders, Slot-A-Shape Builders, and Squigz™ give students practice in sorting and classifying, recognizing and understanding patterns, symmetry and balance, and using science concepts such as observation, comparison, classification, and prediction skills. Building structures with these items requires students to use and exercise their imagination and creativity. In playing with these items, students gain valuable experience in cooperating and sharing with others, building language, expressing their ideas, and solving problems. The Snap and Pop Beads, along with many other items on the list, are good practice with fine-motor and eye-hand coordination skills and require students to focus their eyes in a close visual space, essential skills needed in order to be able read and write. Adding these items to my classroom will dramatically increase the amount of manipulatives I have for students to use during arrival time, small group time, and center time and directly relate to state standards. My deepest desires as a teacher are to instill a love for learning in my prekindergarten students and for them to enjoy their first experience with school. By supporting this project you are helping students develop a love for school, learning, and skills to prepare them for a bright future!
