Many of my students are new to the American school system and adjusting to the culture and expectations. Our school culture pushes students toward independence so that they are prepared after graduation. Many of my students need a bit more helping working toward independent organization and planning skills.
This project will help create an organizational system in our classroom that is clear and simple so that students can be more successful. This system will model planning and management skills that students can apply in all of their classes as well as their lives outside of the classroom. All students will have a class binder that we set up together and as the year continues students will work toward independence and responsibility in terms of their academic management.
To create this system in our classroom we need binders, divider tabs, hole punches, highlighters, markers, and a class wide weekly planning board. The planning board and markers will help students stay up to date on what assignments are due and what to plan for. Their binders will be set up to organize all unit materials and ongoing projects. Having a simple set up that is the same for every student will help minimize lost work, help students plan ahead and manage ongoing projects, and familiarize students with organizational strategies.
