Our school has a strong focus on the arts, but this year, the spotlight is on social-emotional learning - and necessarily so. The American Academy of Pediatrics recently declared child and adolescent mental health a national emergency. Myself (a 3-5 school counselor) and my colleague (the K-2) counselor are working tirelessly to engage our students in increased social-emotional learning, and provide resources for teachers to do the same. By allowing us to access high-quality, existing resources on Teachers Pay Teachers without using our own money, we can extend the crucial learning our students need to manage the multitude of challenges they are currently facing. Increasing classroom lessons, individual tools, and small groups offered allows our students to begin to heal and re-learn how to connect with peers in a healthy way, express their emotions, regulate their bodies, and become the best learners they can be.
