As a team teaching classroom, my students are a blend of various learning styles and abilities. For many of them, the traditional classroom setting can be a daily challenge. It is my goal to move away from a teacher centered-student sedentary model of instruction, towards a student directed classroom. This would include flexible seating with student choice, as opposed to having a child sit at one student desk for the majority of the school day. I would like to have a round whiteboard table with stability ball seating. This would allow a place in the room for children to collaborate. The chairs allow for grounded, tactile movement which can help maintain focus. I added 2 inch binders to our wish list so we can eliminate the need for individual student desks. The first set will be our daily work binders. These will be housed at a central location accessible to students as needed. This is a wonderful way to instill organizational skills at an early age. The second set will be used as portfolios. Each child will develop his/her academic portfolio and bring finished pieces/assessments to parent-student conferences, etc. Having "Smart Seats" available and areas that are student centered will create an environment conducive to learning and allow my students to take a leadership role during their academic day.
