I would love to have Scholastic News Magazine and reading passages for literacy centers and guided reading for my students. By using the Scholastic News magazine, I can teach various Common Core standards for nonfiction. My students will have a better understanding of cause and effect, sequence, author's purpose, and main idea. During center time or during Guided Reading, my students can us the "Think, Talk, Write Nonfiction Reading Center" to explore nonfiction books in depth—as they think, talk and write about each one. The paired passages are great for comparing and contrasting texts. Students will be able to choose a topic that they are interested in. The Nonfiction Comprehension Folders are great for students to learn about the features of nonfiction. Students will learn about main idea, cause and effect, fact and opinion, sequence, compare and contrast, and inferences. I am often trying to find non-fiction material that is grade level appropriate for my students. They are curious about the world around them, but they have limited resources to find out what is going on in the world. As far as they know, they think the world and current events extend to Minecraft and their favorite singer. My students will be able to read about problems in other countries, get more information about health and nutrition, and extend their comprehension skills. These magazines will be great tools to teach students about basic comprehension skills, such as identifying the main idea, comparing and contrasting points of view, and finding facts and opinions in a text.
